The ICA was founded in 1980 by a group of local artists who wanted to present cutting-edge, innovative art and experimental work in a curated space. Their goal was to get out in front of traditional museum programming and to present the newest work being created in the region. Today, we remain dedicated to that vision. The mission of the ICA is to encourage creativity by presenting and interpreting thought-provoking contemporary art to a diverse audience. We are uniquely positioned between the area’s large museums and smaller galleries, which allows us to present the work of established regional artists, while also offering exhibition opportunities for emerging and under-recognized mid-career artists. Admission is free. Donations welcomed.

Covering half a city block of indoor and outdoor space, Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens (PMG) glistens with creativity and urban renaissance. Artist Isaiah Zagar began tiling South Street in the 1960s and never stopped, eventually building a mosaic garden out of ceramic shards, broken mirrors, bicycle spokes, and vivid splashes of dyed cement. The tiled passages of PMG weave over and under ground, and perhaps more than anything through the mind of a dedicated and obsessed artist.

The new mcachicago.org website does not simply incorporate a new visual identity, it also rethinks what a museum website can do, providing visitors greater access than ever before to contemporary art and culture. The new site offers expanded coverage of MCA exhibitions, collections, and events, as well as a broad spectrum of stories about our extended community of artists, audiences, and partnering organizations. It also serves as a rich archive of our past exhibitions and programs, and a demonstration of the long-term relationships that the MCA has forged with art communities and audiences in Chicago and throughout the world.
